Leda Clay: Ottawa's Foundation Challenge
Much of Ottawa sits on Leda clay, a sensitive marine clay left behind from the Champlain Sea that covered the region thousands of years ago. This clay has a particular weakness: when you disturb it through excavation or disturbance, it loses strength. Traditional foundation methods that rely on excavating and pouring concrete into holes actually make the problem worse by breaking down the clay structure as you dig.
Helical piles avoid this problem entirely. Instead of excavating and disturbing the soil, they screw through it without damage, reaching down to stable bearing soil below the problem layers.
